The Department of Plastic Surgery was established in 1965. It is manned by Twelve fully trained Plastic Surgeons with a team of four registrars and a fully equipped Microvascular Lab.
It offers state of the art tertiary level care in all disciplines of Plastic Surgery. The department has an outstanding team of specialists covering all aspects of Plastic Surgery such as Aesthetic Surgery, Craniofacial surgery, Hand Surgery, Reconstructive Microsurgery, Burns and General Plastic Surgery. Approximately fifteen hundred major surgeries are done per year and emergency services are available round the clock. We are one of the centres of excellence in Replantation and Microsurgery and also one of the few multidisciplinary Craniofacial Surgery centres in India.
The department has a very active academic programme. It is accredited by the National Board of Examinations for post graduate training in Plastic Surgery.
The Department has an active community outreach programme in partnership with Smile Train Inc. of USA and under this Smile Train Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Cleft Project, free surgeries are done for poor patients with clefts of lip and palate.
TRENDS
Last decade has been the
period of accelerated growth. As is obvious from the figures below the number
of admissions and operations have increase almost five fold. The surgeries
have increased not only in numbers but also in complexity. A large number of
complex microsurgery and craniofacial surgery and aesthetic surgery is being
done. Major emphasis is laid on quality of work and not just quantity. The
quality is carefully documented and maintained in a monthly audit. This has
helped to a great extent in maintaining high standards of work.

Aesthetic / Cosmetic Surgery
The rapid acceptance by the public of cosmetic surgery confirms its value and the need for it. Cosmetic surgery covers a wide variety of procedures from head to toe. The number of aesthetic surgery performed has steadily increased from 43 in 1998 to 230 in 2005. Procedures include Facelift, Liposuction, Breast reduction/ augmentation abdominoplasty etc.
Aesthetic/ Cosmetic Surgery in India has undergone a radical change over the last decade. Even since beauty queens from India (Refer Ashwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen) have started winning international beauty pagents, the number of patients demanding Cosmetic Surgery in India is rapidly climbing. There was a time when rich Indians looked towards the west for Cosmetic Sugery. This trend is now reversing and a large number of people from the west are coming to India for Cosmetic Surgery where it can be done for fraction of what it costs in this country. Operations as shown in this slide are routinely being done in our hospital.

Reconstructive Microsurgery
Reconstructive microsurgery is the other area of Plastic Surgery where we have taken long strides. SGRH can boast of being the leading centre in the whole of north India for replantation surgery for finger, hand or limb amputations. Besides this complex reconstructions for major tissue losses either due to trauma or cancer is mostly done by advanced microsurgical techniques.

Craniofacial Surgery
The third major superspeciality of Plastic Surgery i.e. craniofacial surgery is as advanced as cosmetic and reconstructive microsurgery. We do more than 300 operations on children with clefts of lip and palate every year. Reconstruction of craniofacial soft tissue and bony injuries (bottom left) is done using advanced bone fixation techniques. Major facial vascular malformations (top right) are managed by preoperative embolisation followed by surgical excision). Other complex faciomaxillary reconstructions are being routinely done.

ACADEMIC
ACTIVITIES
Our department is the first private hospital in India to start DNB training programme in Plastic Surgery in the year 2002. The Unit is recognised for training in our DNB student is taken for this programme. Every year the selection is done on merit by an MCQ exam and an interview. The department conducts its on academic meeting twice a week to discuss important and interesting cases. Regular teaching programmes include clinical demonstrations, journal club, seminars and guest lectures. The curriculum of department aims to make the trainees independent surgeon with basic training and knowledge of plastic surgery. The faulty actively participate in imparting microsurgery training at the Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
Department of Plastic surgery is actively involved in social services. It organizes routinely medical camps in remote areas of the country to provide free medical consultation and treatment. In the year 2005 we organised three camps in Panipat and Mathura where needy patients were seen and then treated free of cost at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

SMILE TRAIN PROJECT
The Department is affiliated with Smile Train Inc. of USA (A non-government charity) and runs the Smile Train SGRH Cleft Project in which poor and needy patients with facial clefts are treated free of cost at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. In the year 2005, 124 cleft surgeries were performed under this project.
INTERNATIONAL MISSION PARTICIPATION
The Department regularly partners with Operation Smile (a US based international charity) in their International Cleft missions in India and abroad. In these missions, free operations (reconstructive plastic surgery) are done on poor patients in remote areas.
