The Super-specialty Block at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has 20 state of the art Operation Theatres (4 groups of 5 each) spread over top two floors i.e. 6th and 7th covering an area of approx. 28,000 sq. feet. (2 theatres exclusively for cardiac surgeries, one for caesarean sections and one for IVF procedures are situated in the old block). The entire 14 thousand sq feet 5th floor also a part of O.T. complex, houses a large postoperative area for day care patients, Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Organ Transplant Intensive Care Unit, O.T. stores (expendable and non expendable) offices, and non clinical support services e.g. billing, admission, reception, cash etc.

Nearly 90-100 major/ minor, elective/ emergency operations are performed daily/ round the clock, out of which 40-45% are on day care basis.

Ergonomics of the operation rooms:

  • Hermetically sealed modular theatres with both hand and foot operated sliding sensor doors (run on nylon wheels for smooth and effortless sliding), each door having a 300 x 300 mm viewing window

  • Seamless flooring, slopping walls and ceiling made up of Zinc Passivated galvanized steel sprayed with 400 micron thick antibacterial paint

  • Washable antistatic and conductive flooring resistant to mechanical stress and dynamic loads

  • Each theatre with 4 air exhausts outlets one at each corner near floor is provided with HEPA filters and a central plainair covered with hand woven perforated polyester sheet. All combined together give the air flow a laminar pattern with 20 air changes per hour of fresh air to minimize Surgical Site Infection (SSI)

  • The ceiling mounted laminar flow friendly Operating Lights emitting white and shadow less light

  • The electro hydraulic operating tables that offer maximum flexibility in their use for doing a variety of surgeries

  • Tile based membrane type control panel mounted flush in theatre wall comprising: day time clock, lapse time clock, dimmer for plainair and peripheral lights, hand free telephone, medical gases status/ alarm and indicators for temperature and humidity

  • Twin plate X-Ray viewing box flashed with the wall

  • Cascade pressure stabilizer having 304 grade SS blades

  • 2 Bay stainless steel scrub sinks with photo electric sensors

  • All theatres are provided with continuous central supply for oxygen, nitrous oxide, high and low pressure air at required flow and pressures. At least 6 theatres are fitted with extra ceiling mounted endoscopic pendants with central supply of carbon dioxide for laparoscopic surgeries

  • Uninterrupted electricity supply through UPS is ensured in the theaters

  • The spacious pre and postoperative areas are fitted with modern monitors along with other paraphernalia for continuous observation of patients

  • A patient shifting system is in place for smooth transfer of patients from table to trolley, trolley to bed and vice versa

  • Keeping in view the apprehensions of attendants, a meticulous informing system through announcements by a receptionist and the facility of videoconferencing are in place

The latest additions are the bariatric surgery (performed on morbidly obese), the laser guided prostatic surgery, the minimal invasive endoscopic spinal surgeries, joint replacement surgeries, microvascular surgeries and transplant surgeries (like kidney & liver) etc. Special precautions for infection control are being taken by regular microbiological surveillance of O.Ts and CSSD.

Equipment:

The O.Ts are equipped with state-of–the-art equipment like C-arms (one is fitted with DSA system), operating microscopes, blood gas analysers, thermoelastrography, anaesthesia machines. Solar monitors, Cuza machines for GI/  Transplant/ Neuro etc., phacoemulsification and vitrectomy machines, ultracisors, Argons lasers etc.

“Sterrad” – the plasma sterilizer has been installed in OT complex for sterilization of optical and other delicate instruments. It gives sterilization service in just one hour.

Training:

  • SGRH has consultants who regularly keep on updating themselves in their respective specialties and equipment handling through regular CMEs held in various parts of the country and abroad.

  • O.T. personnel are also regularly trained on various aspects like use of disinfectants, sterilants, handling equipment, preparation of medication, infection control practices, waste management, patient management and observing universal standard precautions etc.

  • There is a surgical skill center located in OT. It is for the surgeons to practice and perfect their finer skills. All equipment and instruments to that end are available.

  • Over 25 live transmissions for training purpose are done every year.

Director O.T., Chairman O.T. Committee and O.T. Administrator along with various members of O.T. committee (Sr. Surgeons, Chief Engineer, Microbiologist, Nursing superintendent) periodically meet to review the performance of various activities of theatre.
