NEWS

Dr. Mala Srivastava, Consultant, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has been awarded second prize for her presentation “Abnormal Mammography in Perimenopausal & Post menopausal Women” by the Indian Menopause Society.

Over the last 5 decades and more since 1974 onwards when the management was taken over by the consultants the department has made tremendous progress and has now come up as a premier tertiary care center in the country. This has been possible through the farsightedness, dedication and simultaneous development of the other specialties in the hospital. It has a unique distinction of starting the following subspecialties:

Adolescent clinic
Gynae Oncology clinic
High risk pregnancy clinic
Family planning clinic
Mature women clinic
Uro-Gynaecology clinic

The consultant staff includes eminent academicians and surgeons of repute.

Gynaecological Laparoscopic / Hysteroscopic surgery.

There is an ongoing programme of gynae endoscopic surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital . Operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy is being routinely carried out. Procedures being carried out in operative laparoscopy include fertility enhancing laparoscopic surgery like laparoscopic salpingostomy (opening of blocked tube mouth), neosalpingostomy (creating new tubal opening), tubal anastomosis, adhesiolysis. Besides these, laparoscopic hysterectomy (removal of diseased uterus), myomectomy (removal of fibroids), cystectomy (removal of cyst), alongwith laparoscopic management of ectopic pregnancy are being routinely performed.

In the field of Hysteroscopy, besides carrying out diagnostic hysteroscopy for ascertaining the cause of irregular bleeding, corrective procedures likein the resection of septum of the uterus, removal of adhesions, removal of polyps, tubal catheterisation for blocked tubes (in infertility cases), TCRE (Trans cervical resection of endometrium) for heavy period are being performed routinely. The advanced technique of operative microhysteroscopy for these procedures is being frequently used here. In the last one year 412 operative laparoscopies and hysteroscopies were carried out in this unit . Out of which 228 were level - III & level IV.

In Vitro fertilization (IVF)

The center for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and human reproduction was established at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 1991 which is a leading multispecialty health care provider of India. The center completed its tenth anniversary on 21st September 2001 and has entered a new decade as the largest integrated provider of infertility services in Northern India. This unit now staffs more than 10 medical and paramedical workers including 4 clinicians and 2 full time embryologists. The dedicated team of this unit has endeavored to keep pace with the advancements in the field of IVF so as to provide the patients with best possible treatment.

Today apart from conventional IVF we are also undertaking intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and laser assisted ICSI with ejaculated sperms as well as testicular sperms obtained after testicular sperm extraction (TESE), testicular sperm aspiration (TESA), percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA).

Cryopreservation of embryos is done for about 25% of oocyte pickup cycles with very promising outcome. In patients with ovarian failure IVF with donor oocytes is also being done. In patients with absent / severely damaged uterus IVF with surrogacy is being performed.

To ensure a high pregnancy rate a great deal of individualized care, backed by adequate expertise, experience and dedication is provided by our unit . Today our results compare well with any other successful center of the world (35- 40%).
