HOSPITAL NURSING SERVICE - MOVING TOWARDS NURSING EXCELLENCE

Today, Nursing services at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is at the threshold of achieving Nursing Excellence. The Nurse has to nourish, protect, prevent illness, avoid injury and educate the community. She must keep pace with the doctor and thus needs better education and best training in technical skill. Service to patient remains her primary function and the reason for the existence of Nursing profession. The Nursing Service is crucial for the reputation of the hospital. The skills and efficiency in the Nursing staff is vital and touchy. She Is a loyal friend to the doctor, affectionate mother - substitute to the patient, coordinator of all ward activities of ward personnel. She has to exert all her faculties in managing sensitive ICU and OT areas. She has to organize safety measures to prevent accidents to patients. She has to be tactful, independent, tolerant & sensitive while dealing with patients and their relation, doctors, paramedical and the class four-category employees. 

The Nursing Staff in the hospital play a crucial role in patient care. It provides useful support under the control of Nursing Superintendent.

Duties of Nursing Staff 

  1. Receives a patient upon Admission/Ward /Room/Bed. 

  2. Checks all Admission papers and creates a patient record file. 

  3. Inform the unit doctor of the patient having arrived. 

  4. Implements written orders of the Doctor on the file 

    • Prepares investigation slips

    • Draws blood for investigation 

    • Starts a I/V line 

    • Copies a prescription for order to pharmacy 

    • Directs ward boys for various errands 

    • Given medication to patients 

    • Monitors vitals (pulse/BP/Resp), fluid input/output charts. 

    • Console/ counsel the patient

    • Send diet order to kitchen as per Doctor advise 

    • Collects results of Lab, X-Rays etc.

    • Update information on patient to pass on to doctor 

    • In O.T., she organises smooth conduct of surgical procedures and assists the surgeon 
      during procedures

    • Maintains records of patient, records of visit of Doctors, consent for procedures, records of billing, discharge papers etc.

    • Any other requirement of patient.

TRAINING

  1. Induction Training - One full days training on hospital work . 

  2. In service educational programme is being run on every Mon, Tue, Wed, attended by a group of 25 Nursing Staff 
    The topics covered are: 

    • Nosocomial Infection 

    • Hospitals waste management policies & procedures 

    • Infection disease 

    • Theory & practical 

      • Orientation to customer services 

      • Specific diseases 

  3. On the job Training on Nursing Skills 

    • CPR 

    •  I /V0/ infusion practice 

    • Use of Vacutainers 

    • Use of Infusion pump, syrnge pumps, baxter pumps, bioaps, O2 regulators, nebulizers, glucometer testing, defibrillator, ventilators. 

    • AS dressings, stoma care 

    • Procedure catheterization, Ryle's tube feeding. 

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

In the absence of a formal CNE (Continued Nursing Education) the hospital plans to started an 'In-house - CNE' which shall review courses and assign credits. In future, on line courses can be accessed Health Stream University. 

QUALITY CIRCLE 

A non-punitive, competitive approach has been started in the Wards wherein all Nursing practice is monitored against a Check List by Senior Nuts' staff 'in rotation. This has instilled confidence in correction of incorrect habits by colleagues, without fear of punitive action. It has improved communication among nursing colleagues. At the end of three months, the Wards shall be evaluated and one Ward adjudged the "Best Ward" shall get a running trophy to keep for next 3 months. 

A NURSING AUDIT COMMITTEE has been formed with the following as its members: 

  • Medical Superintendent, Chairperson 

  • Nursing Superintendent, Member Secretary 

  • Deputy Nursing Superintendent 

  • Assistant Nursing Superintendent 

The Committee shall meet once a month to discuss at least five such cases randomly selected. The purpose of the Nursing Audit Committee shall be to educate the nursing staff to adopt progressive patient friendly practices as well as to weed out some unwanted practices, to identify errors in nursing practice and to employ error reduction strategies. The report of the Nursing Audit Committee shall be maintained in confidentiality.
