Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery Centre features in Guinness Book of Records 1997 for performing most minimally invasive surgeries.

It also features in Limca Book of Records since year 2000 for performing most minimal access surgeries.

Awarded Padma Shri 2002 by His Excellency Shri K.R. Narayanan, the President of India.

The department has done pioneering work in the field of Minimal access surgery which is appreciated and recognized as an accredited centre world over by the National and International organizations of repute : Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-surgeons (IAGES) Indian Medical Association (IMA) Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

A Tele-surgery, virtual reality and Tele-robotic cyber surgery centre is in place at Room no. 200 Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The department has initiated the process of formulating guidelines under the Chairmanship of Dr. Pradeep Kr Chowbey for training and safe practice of minimal access surgery in the country. Accordingly, a core group has been formed which constitutes experts from all over the country to deliberate and formulate guidelines and recommendations. These will be the guidelines for minimal access surgery proposed and supported by all medical bodies and governmental organizations of repute viz. Indian Medical Association, National Board of Examinations, Medical Council of India, Ministry of Health and Indian Council of Medical research.

The department has a number of publications of several original scientific and clinical manuscripts in leading international and national journals.

The department had the great honour of operating His Excellency Shri K R Narayanan for his gall bladder surgery (29th March 2001) which was deeply appreciated by His Excellency.
