Endoscopic surgery for nasal and sinus disorders was established at Sir
Ganga Ram hospital in 1993 which was then one of the first institutions in the
country to do so. Further technical advancements in endoscopic surgery led to
going beyond the sinuses into ear and throat and now even into disorders of
the eye and brain (endo-orbitosurgery and neurosurgery) . All these efforts
have now crystallised into the formation of a super specialised MASENT unit in
the hospital since 2005.
Patient care is at the core of MAS as it avoids an external incision which
is the primary source of pain, swelling, infection and other psychological
sequelae. Often, it influences patients to delay an operation that is critical
to their well being.
Due to advent of advanced radio imaging techniques as well as
navigation systems, the Minimal Access techniques have acquired precise localisation and
orientation like never before resulting in much superior surgical results than
conventional surgeries.

Ailments
MASENT Team
The Unit is headed by Dr. Devinder Rai, Senior Consultant, who has been one
of the pioneer surgeons in establishing nasal endoscopic techniques in the
management of ENT disorders. The first one to start Endoscopic Sinus surgery
at SGRH, as well as one of the first ones in India after being trained abroad,
he has successfully performed close to around 5000 surgeries so far. He is
also an acclaimed teacher, and has been demonstrating the numerous techniques
to ENT surgeons all over India and abroad
He is joined by Dr. Manish
Munjal, consultant. With a keen interest in
developing image guidance systems and voice disorders in the field, he has
been associated integrally with various publications and workshops in the
field of Endoscopic Sinus surgery, including the annual one at SGRH.
Activities
Workshops: A national workshop on Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Skull Base ‘ENDORHINE’ is held in the 1st week of February every
year. Over 100 ENT surgeons and trainees participate every year to get accustomed to our
techniques through watching live surgeries and interactive panel discussions
Presentations:
A poster presentation depicting the closure of brain fluid leaks was
presented by Dr. Devinder Rai at the International Congress of Otolaryngology
at Athens in September 2006.
Camps: A medical camp was attended at Rewari in May 2007 by a team of doctors led
by Dr. Devinder Rai and Dr. Manish Munjal. Over 300 patients were examined for
sinus disorders and appropriate advice was given.
