Sir Ganga Ram Tobacco Cessation Clinic is a specialized service where people who are habituated or addicted to Tobacco can get help and support to quit their tobacco habit

Why tobacco cessation clinic?
Researches show that 70% of the smokers want to quit the tobacco habit but only 30% of them try quitting, and only 3% of the smokers are able to quit on their own. It requires more than just willpower to quit this deadly habit because nicotine is as addictive as heroine or cocaine. WHO says, "Treat tobacco addiction as a disease not as a habit".

Tobacco dependence is a chronic condition that often requires repeated intervention. Effective smoking cessation treatments can produce long-term and permanent abstinence.

Sir Ganga Ram Tobacco Cessation Clinic

At Sir Ganga Ram Tobacco cessation clinic, we provide a comprehensive quit tobacco program wherein the patient undergoes a scientific assessment and diagnosis. In addition to the psychological testing, the patient is subjected to a thorough medical examination for assessing the impact of tobacco on the body. The program provides a stepped care intervention to help people quit tobacco. There is a provision of a range of different intensity interventions, which are applied in response to the needs of the smoker. The program involves multiple counseling sessions to help smokers change their behaviour and provide step-by-step assistance during the quit attempt.

What are the different treatment modules for the smokers?
There are as many treatment modules as the number of smokers. Since tobacco cessation is a habit or behavioural change, it is a highly individualized treatment program suited specifically in response to the needs of the smoker.

Proper diagnostic testing and psychometric testing is done to assess the physiological and psychological profile of the smoker.

Light smokers: Psychotherapeutic interventions that include motivation enhancement therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, adaptive coping skills training and relapse prevention training.

Moderate smokers: Psychotherapeutic interventions + Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT): In NRT, low dosage of nicotine is given to the patient via buccal absorption (gums), skin (patch), inhalers or lozenges. NRT makes quitting easier by reliably reducing the severity of withdrawal, thereby making it easier for quitters to cope with abstinence while 'unlearning' the deeply grained habit and behavioral elements of smoking

Heavy smokers: Psychotherapeutic intervention + Nicotine Replacement Therapy + Pharmacotherapy (Buproprian HCl, SR tablets): It is a non-nicotinic oral therapy for smoking cessation that works on the biology of nicotine addiction. It enhances the dopamine levels in the brain, thereby reducing the urge to smoke and the severity of withdrawal symptoms.
