Paediatric nephrology
clinic is held once a week in the department of paediatrics to provide
comprehensive care to paediatric patients having renal problems. The spectrum of
renal problems include nephrotic syndrome, chronic renal failure, recurrent UTI,
renal anomalies, resistant rickets, hypertension and various bladder function
disorders. Difficult and resistant cases of nephrotic syndrome are regularly
referred to this clinic for further management. All patients of nephrotic
ayndromeare
advised to keep a daily record of urine protein and the medications they are
receiving, for proper evaluation on follow up. An excellent back up of
investigation facilities like nuclear imaging, conventional radiology and
urodynamic studies helps to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. The clinic has more
than 200 patients who are on regular follow up. The paediatric nephrology clinic
coordinates its services with the pediatric surgeons whenever needed.
Patient and parent
education along with their active involvement in the management of the cases is
an important component of the comprehensive services provided by the clinic. The
parents are explained in detail the changes in the diet, which are needed for
treatment of renal problems. Some selected cases are even referred to the
dietician for special instructions. Schoolteachers and a child psychologist are
some of the other persons required to help in managing patients with chronic
renal problems.
The pediatric
nephrology clinic provides ample opportunity to the DNB students for learning
and training. The students are encouraged to work up the cases and then discuss
them with the consultant. With the quality of services being provided in the clinic,
it has become a major referral center for paediatric renal problems.
