Arthroscopic Surgery is the modern
advanced method of surgery of the joints. It involves use of an Arthroscope, which
is a thin telescope to which is attached a small video camera. Once the
arthroscope is inserted in a joint, the structures within the joint can be
visualised on the TV monitor as a highly illuminated and magnified view showing
the normal and abnormal structures very clearly. The doctor can see the
structures in the joint and diagnose the problem. Depending upon the problem,
correctable surgery can be performed at the same time through specialised
instruments. Some of these problems if left untreated, may lead to
arthritis.
Arthroscopy is useful in disorders of
knee, ankle, shoulder, wrist and elbow joints. Mostly it is done for joint
injuries in sports persons. It is minimally invasive and even complex procedures
like cruciate reconstruction in the kneecan be done arthroscopically. Mostly it is a
day-care procedure where the patient goes home the same day. Leaves no scar, minimal
post-operative pain & early return to work. Like all minimally invasive
surgeries, special instruments and special training is needed.
