The Department of
Medicine has a Rheumatology division in operation since 1994. Patients
with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sjogren’s syndrome,
Progressive Systemic Sclerosis, Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy, Overlap
Connective tissue disorder, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatic Fever and
Vasculitis are managed by this division. They are treated with disease
modifying drugs such as methotrexate, sulphasalazine, chloroquine /
hydroxychloroquine, azathioprine, d-penicillamine, gold, cyclosporine and
leflunomide. Biological therapy (anti TNF) has been added to the armamentarium
and is being used for early and resistant rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative
spondyloarthropathy (ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis). Anti CD-20 is
also available for resistant cases.
Comprehensive care is
given to all patients in the clinic. Patients are taught about exercises, joint
protection maneuvers and are given splints whereever necessary. An
Orthopaedics surgeon is available for correction of deformities of rheumatoid
and joint replacement.
The division works in
close association with the state-of-the-art laboratories in carrying out the
following investigations –

ASO, CRP,
Rheumatoid Factor (quantitative) and Anti CCP

Screening test for
auto-antibodies by ANA (hep-2)

Individual
autoantibody profiling :
The department has
been represented in both national and international fora as faculty.
It has many publications to its credit and is actively involved in teaching of
postgraduates in Medicine about Rheumatology, Immunology and HIV-related
disorders. It has conducted many CMEs to educate physicians about
rheumatology problems.
